Musical Notes

Lessons

My teaching has 4 principles:

1. Make it fun!

2. Make it sound good

3. More playing, less talking

4. Pulse, then rhythm, then everything else

See below for my approaches to teaching different age groups.

Xylophone

Primary (4-11 yrs)

  • Blended approach of instrumental skills plus general musical skills.

  • Plenty of fun games with clapping, singing, and improvising.

  • Focus on developing good foundation of pulse & rhythm, and basic instrumental technique.

  • Capitalising on the natural curiousity & enthusiasm of young children, with lots of praise & encouragment.

Music Class

Secondary (11-18 yrs)

  • I acknowledge the balance required between music studies and school work, and will always discuss priorities with the student and parents.

  • Help them explore different genres & aspects of music, to find what they are passionate about: jazz, blues, classical, folk, composition, improvisation.

  • Incorporate aspects of musical theory and history where relevant.

  • Help them maintain their interest  in and love for playing music.

Music Notes

Adult (18+)

  • It takes courage to be an adult learner!

  • Adults require very different support from children.

  • Adults often have a specific goal in mind: to have fun, to stay mentally sharp, to play along with their children or grandchildren, to join a local group, to revive a past skill. I tailor my lessons to help them achieve their goals.
